Forest bathing at Kinneil Estate

Woodland above Bo'ness where 2,000 years of history sit among the trees, from the Antonine Wall to James Watt's cottage.

Kinneil is the old estate on the western edge of Bo'ness, bought by the town council in 1922 for public recreation. It splits into two parts: a formal landscape round Kinneil House and the museum, and a larger area of mature woodland, much of it Sitka spruce and Scots pine plantation. Running through it is a line of the Antonine Wall with the remains of a Roman fort, the ruins of Kinneil Church, and a cottage once occupied by James Watt.

The formal grounds near the house and museum are the natural starting point, then head into the trees for quiet. Under the conifers the light is low, and in spring and summer look for wood anemone, bugle, foxglove and celandine along the edges. Kinneil House itself is not open to the public, but the museum nearby tells the story of the estate and the wall.
