Forest bathing at Lang Craigs

Woodland Trust ground below volcanic crags above Dumbarton, mixing old woodland, new native planting and wide views.

Lang Craigs is about 250 hectares of Woodland Trust Scotland land above Dumbarton, around 200 of it woodland. There are fragments of ancient semi-natural woodland and scattered old trees, and mature Scots pine and sycamore that may date from the Overtoun Estate's design, alongside some 230,000 native trees planted since the Trust bought the site in 2011. Above the trees the volcanic crags rise to open moorland, with views over the Clyde to Dumbarton Rock and north to Ben Lomond.

Access is through Overtoun Estate, and four waymarked walks start from the shared car park; the longest is a 3.5km circuit to the Round Wood Hill viewpoint. The sheltered glens are the place to stop on a windy day; the upper slopes suit a clear one. Lower paths are surfaced, but some sections are steep or muddy. There are no toilets on site.
