Forest bathing at Peatlands Park
Raised bog and old semi-natural woodland near the M1, crossed by waymarked paths and boardwalks.
Peatlands Park is one of Northern Ireland's country parks, about eight miles east of Dungannon and signposted from junction 13 of the M1. Peat has been forming here for around 10,000 years, and alongside the open bog there are large areas of semi-natural deciduous woodland, including the long-established Annagarriff Wood. Parts of the park are National Nature Reserves and Special Areas of Conservation. There are also traditional orchards and a reconstructed narrow-gauge turf railway, which is not running at present.
A network of waymarked paths runs through the woods and out across the bogs, and a boardwalk takes you through the bog garden. It's a good place for unhurried walking, and the contrast between the closed woodland and the wide, open bog is part of the appeal. The car park, picnic area and toilets open from 9am with seasonal closing times, while pedestrians can come in all year. Entry and parking are free.
