Forest bathing at Plas Newydd House and Garden

A National Trust estate on the Menai Strait, with an Australasian arboretum, old woodland and red squirrels.

Plas Newydd sits on the Anglesey shore of the Menai Strait, looking across to the mountains of Eryri. Around the house are 40 acres of Grade I listed garden and 129 acres of woodland and parkland. The arboretum, once a wartime orchard, was replanted as an Australasian garden in the late 1970s, with eucalyptus and southern beech; near its exit a group of eucalyptus forms a tall, quiet 'cathedral'. Red squirrels, reintroduced in 2008, are now found across the estate.

The National Trust's short Hidden Corners walk is a good shape for a slow visit: past the terraces, along the sea wall, then into the natural woodland of Church Bank, with steps down to a bird hide and a red squirrel hide. Surfaces are a mix of concrete and natural path, with some uphill steps, and there is a sheer drop at the sea wall. Spring brings the rhododendron garden and Camellia Dell into flower; arrive at opening time for the quietest woods.
