Forest bathing at Roughcastle

Woodland on signposted paths from the Falkirk Wheel to a stretch of the Antonine Wall and a Roman fort.

Roughcastle is a wood of about 33 hectares on the hill above the Falkirk Wheel, managed by the Central Scotland Green Network Trust. It is part of a World Heritage Site: a short stretch of the Antonine Wall and the remains of a small Roman fort sit among the trees. Walking up from the Wheel, the wood is a straightforward way to step away from the visitor centre and spend time under the trees.

Well signposted routes start at the Falkirk Wheel and lead up through the woodland to the wall and the fort, so you can make it as short or as long as you like. Take your time on the way up and stop wherever the trees open out. The Wheel area is busy, especially at weekends and in summer, so a weekday morning is the best time for quiet.
