Forest bathing at The Spirit of Llynfi Woodland
A young woodland of over 60,000 trees on a former colliery site above Maesteg, with ponds, heath and wide views.
The Spirit of Llynfi Woodland lies on the eastern slopes of the upper Llynfi Valley, about nine miles north of Bridgend, on the site of the former Coegnant Colliery and Maesteg Washery. Natural Resources Wales planted it with local people, and over 60,000 trees are now growing here: broadleaves, fruit trees and ornamental trees, among ponds, marsh and heath. It is young woodland rather than old, and more open, with long views down the valley.
There are several access points from Maesteg, including Coegnant Road and Heol Tywith. The Llynfi Valley Trail is an all ability route through the lower half, with an accessible path up to the higher ground. Waymarked trails such as Fair Grove and The Iron Track use forest tracks and tarmac with occasional mud and rock. Look out for the Keeper of the Colliery, an oak sculpture of a miner.
