Forest bathing at Montreathmont Forest

A large, flat conifer forest south of Brechin, with long tracks and capercaillie in the quieter corners.

Montreathmont is a big Forestry and Land Scotland forest about five kilometres south of Brechin, covering over 700 hectares. It is mostly conifer plantation, crossed by a network of long forest tracks used by walkers, mountain bikers and, in winter, husky racers. Capercaillie live here and can sometimes be heard, and owls, buzzards and deer are about. Its size means you can walk a long way without meeting anyone.

Expect wide forest tracks rather than waymarked trails, so take a map and plan a loop. The forest is at its quietest on weekdays and early in the morning. Please keep to the tracks and keep dogs close, especially in spring, to avoid disturbing capercaillie. There are no facilities in the forest; Brechin and Forfar are the nearest towns.
