Forest bathing at Oxford Island National Nature Reserve

A nature reserve on the south-east shore of Lough Neagh, with woodland, wildflower meadows and reedbeds on level paths.

Oxford Island is a peninsula on the south-eastern shore of Lough Neagh, near Lurgan, owned and managed by the council as a National Nature Reserve. It mixes small woodlands with wildflower meadows, reedbeds and open shoreline, and there are bird watching hides looking out over the lough. The Lough Neagh Discovery Centre sits in the middle of the reserve, with Kinnego Marina next door.

This is the easy-access choice for the county. The paths are flat and mostly tarmac, designed so that everyone can use them, with a four-mile circuit if you want to walk the whole reserve. The woodland is in patches rather than one big block, so the pleasure here is in slowing down between trees, reeds and water and stopping at the hides. Toilets and refreshments are at the Discovery Centre and the marina, and parking is free.
