Forest bathing at Ceunant Cynfal National Nature Reserve

A narrow, deep gorge below Llan Ffestiniog with oak rainforest, cascades, waterfalls and the rock stack of Huw Llwyd's Pulpit.

Ceunant Cynfal is a National Nature Reserve below the village of Llan Ffestiniog, where the River Cynfal has cut a narrow, deep gorge with steep cascades and waterfalls, including Rhaeadr Cynfal. The oak woodland on its sides is a remnant of the ancient Celtic rainforest and of international importance. The rock is carved into potholes, slots and arches, and a stack in the river is known as Huw Llwyd's Pulpit.

There is no car park: park considerately in Llan Ffestiniog and follow the public footpath to the reserve entrance. The Rhaeadr Cynfal Waterfall Walk is a little under a mile and a half there and back, but it is rugged, with rocky outcrops, rock that is slippery when wet and unprotected sections beside sheer drops. It is not waymarked, so check the information panel at the start and wear boots with good grip. Summer brings redstarts and pied flycatchers.
