Scots pines in the Black Wood of Rannoch, Perthshire

Forest bathing at Carie and the Black Wood of Rannoch

Ancient Scots pine above the south shore of Loch Rannoch, with burnside trails and views over the Black Wood.

Carie is a Forestry and Land Scotland forest on the south side of Loch Rannoch, about three and a half miles west of Kinloch Rannoch, looking over the neighbouring Black Wood of Rannoch. It has stands of ancient Scots pine and is good for wildlife, with red squirrels, deer and pine martens. This is a remote part of Highland Perthshire, and the long drive in is part of the reason it stays quiet.

Park at the free Carie car park, about half a mile past the Kilvrecht campsite on the South Loch Rannoch road. The easy burnside trails have wildlife carvings to find along the way; for something harder, a path climbs up the gorge. There is a picnic area but no shop or café; the nearest small shop is in Kinloch Rannoch, and Pitlochry and Aberfeldy are about 20 miles away. Bring what you need.
