Forest bathing at Bishopston Valley

A steep, ancient wooded valley where the stream vanishes underground before reaching the pebble beach at Pwll Du.

Bishopston Valley is a long, narrow limestone valley of ancient woodland, owned and cared for by the National Trust, running from Kittle down to the pebble bay at Pwll Du. The stream disappears into holes in the valley floor and comes back halfway down; at Guzzle Hole you can hear water rushing underground. Look out for the wild service tree, a good sign of old woodland, and for Daw Pit, where the ground collapsed into an underground river.

The National Trust's walk starts at Kittle Green and is four miles there and back, about two and a half hours, beginning with a steep descent and ending with the climb back up. The woodland floor is often muddy and stony, so this is one for boots rather than trainers. Parking is in a non National Trust car park in Kittle, and there is a bus stop a couple of minutes from the start.
