Forest bathing at Mill Wood

A small ancient wood on the old Penrice estate, with mill ruins, fishponds and a strong show of spring flowers.

Mill Wood is an ancient woodland about 12 miles west of Swansea, once part of the Penrice estate. You can still see traces of late 18th century landscaping and planting, the ruins of a watermill and the fishponds that supplied the kitchens of Penrice Castle. It is a small, enclosed place on narrow paths, which makes it good for walking slowly and paying attention to what is close at hand.

Spring is the time to come: bluebells, ramsons, red campion, cow parsley, marsh marigold and meadowsweet, plus a patch of wild daffodils. Parking is a free roadside space by the entrance, reached down a single track lane signposted to Penrice. Information panels at the gate and by the mill ruins explain the history. The paths are narrow and can be slippery and muddy, and part of the circular route has been closed after damage, so check the signs on the day.
