Forest bathing at Coed y Felin Nature Reserve

Ancient oak and ash woodland near Hendre, with an old railway path along the valley floor and bluebells in spring.

Coed y Felin is a North Wales Wildlife Trust reserve about four miles north-west of Mold, near the village of Hendre. It is mostly ancient semi-natural woodland, from oak to ash with some sweet chestnut, plus patches of wet woodland, and the trust manages it by selective thinning and coppicing. In spring the ground fills with bluebells and celandines, and herb-Paris grows here; in July the rare Deptford pink flowers on the steep eastern slopes.

The lower path follows an old railway line along the valley and is wheelchair accessible, with picnic tables, so it suits a slow, level visit. Higher up, older paths and steps climb the slopes; they are not hard, but can be muddy. Benches are dotted around the reserve. Park in the main reserve car park just past Hendre, or the small car park opposite the old pub by the lower path. It is a small reserve, so walk it slowly.
