Forest bathing at Dougalston Woodlands
Old estate woodland on the edge of Milngavie, planted by an 18th-century tobacco merchant around his own loch.
Dougalston was the country estate of John Glassford, one of Glasgow's tobacco merchants, who planted the land extensively and made Dougalston Loch as an ornamental lake. His 18th-century doocot still stands on what is now a golf course, and the woodlands, the loch and the Ladies Pond are what remain of the designed landscape. The Dougalston Trail, about 6 kilometres, links them from Milngavie.
The walk starts from Milngavie and is signposted from Baldernock Road, passing old Baldernock Mill and crossing a ford. The woods by the loch are the natural place to stop and sit. This is an intermediate route, with some steep hills and rough surfaces, so wear boots, especially after rain. Roe deer are often seen in the fields by Dowan Farm. Keep to the paths where the trail passes the golf course.
