Forest bathing at Pwllycrochan Woods
Ancient and mixed broadleaved woodland on the slopes above Colwyn Bay, cut by two streams in deep dingles.
Pwllycrochan Woods covers 21 hectares of the hillside above Colwyn Bay, split into three parts by King's Drive and Llanrwst Road. It is mostly deciduous, with an ancient section of mature trees and some planted exotics such as sweet chestnut and firs. Two streams run through deep dingles, so the woods are full of small changes in level, shade and sound. The name is thought to mean 'cauldron pool'. It has been a Local Nature Reserve since 2000.
Waymarked circular trails start from the access points to the middle part of the wood, where a map board shows the routes. Because it sits right on the edge of town, this is an easy wood to fit into a morning, and the dingles stay sheltered on a breezy coastal day. Listen for nuthatch, treecreeper and great spotted woodpecker, and tawny owls towards dusk. Paths follow the slope and the stream valleys, so expect some ups and downs.
