Mixed woodland on the Sizergh estate, Cumbria

Forest bathing at Sizergh

A 1,600-acre estate south of Kendal, with ancient woodland, old parkland, orchards and wetland around a medieval castle.

Sizergh is a National Trust estate just south of Kendal, around 1,600 acres of ancient woodland, historic parkland, traditional Westmorland orchards, limestone pasture and wetland around the old castle. It is a good choice if you want trees without fells: the walking is gentle, and you can mix woodland with open parkland and water.

The Holeslack access trail is an accessible 1.2 mile loop through Holeslack Wood, and the longer Park End Moss walk takes you through woodland, parkland and wetland. The wider estate is open dawn to dusk, and dogs are welcome there, though not in the gardens. The house and garden have an admission charge; the estate walks do not need a ticket, but you will pay to park unless you are a member. The area round the café and play area is the busiest, so head out along the trails to find quiet.
