Forest bathing at Coed Nercwys

A conifer forest near Mold on the edge of the Clwydian Range, with old lead-mine ruins, a walled meadow and a quiet waymarked loop.

Coed Nercwys is a conifer forest a few miles south of Mold on the eastern edge of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape, managed by Natural Resources Wales. Among the trees are the ruins of a 19th-century lead mine and the remains of a shepherd's cottage with a walled wildflower meadow, and a new orchard has been planted. The small lake, Llyn Ochin, has dried out, but the marshy ground it left is good for dragonflies and newts.

The waymarked Coed Nercwys Walk is a moderate loop of about two and three quarter miles with a gentle climb, suitable for adaptive equipment, and there is an optional extra climb to a trig point. The walking route runs clockwise and the cycle trail anticlockwise, so you meet riders head on rather than from behind. The walled meadow is a good place to stop in summer. As a working forest, trails may close or be diverted for felling.
